Our destination will be approximately 5 miles north of the exit at Thompson Springs, Utah, which is about 70 miles west of Grand Junction. After leaving the interstate, the roads are good. It’s paved up to the petroglyph parking area, and then gravel on up to the ghost town.
There is a nice 7-11 in Thompson Springs with restrooms (and really good pina colada Slurpees *wink* plus sandwiches made fresh daily). There is a BLM outhouse at the Indian Writings area.
Some of the things you can see include: the petroglyphs / pictographs from 3 different time periods & cultures; a short walk to a rock arch; old railroad trestles; wildflowers, birds, lizards, rabbits, etc. The ghost town of Sego features a neat cemetery, ruins of the Sego Company Store, some houses or buildings scattered throughout the area, rusty old cars, all in some pretty canyon scenery. The town of Thompson Springs also has some abandoned buildings that can be fun to photograph too.
Feel free to write if you have questions. I hope we have a good turnout and a beautiful day to explore!
Meeting at Fruita Visitor Center/Rest Area/Helicoptor Memorial at 9:00 am
